    Hello,

I’m using a commercial DVD that contains closed captioning data. I’m trying to use the VE shield to extract the data.

I can see the bit tick marks on the screen but I can’t find the data. I’ve tried adjusting the lines, the capture start element, but i can’t seem to find it.

Has anyone had success extracting CC data from a commercial DVD?

    Thank you,
    Michael M

After tons of experimenting across a lot of DVDs, my current working theory is that my DVD player does not transmit the CC data. Based on some Googling, this is pretty reasonable to expect with many players.

I’d look into the DVD player’s menu to see if there are any options about closed captions.
Also, tell your TV to display closed captions. If it displays captions from the DVD, then you know for sure that the DVD player is including the caption data in the video signal.

Yeah, I went through that. Nothing. I have a feeling that since this is a combo BluRay/DVD, it’s doing digital conversion/filtering on everything and the output is stripped of the metadata. After looking through some forums for hearing impaired people, this seems to be not uncommon.

My next step is to try the output from my neighbor’s Comcast digital cable box. I’m hoping that broadcast signal has a higher probability of success.

Cable worked. Ditching the DVD plan.
