LaserActive is a rare device which was a commercial failure due to very high price. It consists of an analog Laserdisc player and a minimalistic 8-bit game console. The key difference is that the console has genlock capabilities. When game is played, Laserdisc player provides full-motion video background, on top of which simple text and graphics generated by 8-bit console are displayed. The console also controls the player to quickly change tracks, and, thus, backgrounds.
It is possible to make a similar device using Video Experimenter! You need a DVD player capable of playing video files from a thumb drive and equipped with composite output. Arduino with Video Experimenter can provide simple game text graphics with genlock and imitate pushputton pressing on DVD player using relays controlled by GPIO.
