Hey Micheal, hope all is well! Thanks again for your help a few weeks back, I ended up just going with an analog sensor to avoid the timing issue.

I’ve been doing some research and ran across this post:

    http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1473207

It seems that it’s possible to do OSD without the LM1881, and a fairly simple circuit. Granted this does not have the syncing ability, but if one was just wanting simple OSD would this be a feasible alternative to the LM1881 setup?

The reason I am asking, is because I am wanting an easy / cheap way to do the black background behind the text. The text on a white background is hard/impossible to read. So upon researching I found the forum post above.

    Let me know your thoughts!

    Thanks,
    Derek

    Derek,
There’s been some work to create a black or gray background for letters using the Video Experimenter. See this thread: http://nootropicdesign.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2363

I used a MOSFET as well as a 4066 analog switch IC to create a gray/black background on certain lines of the output. The background persists for the entire length of the line, but it was effective.

The resource you point to is also very interesting. He’s not using a LM1881 and is simply waiting for the long drop in voltage to detect frame boundaries. Nice work.

There is now a LM1881 version of this OSD however the Pin usage is different than what is used in the Video Experimenter. There are many of these board out there, some sold by flytron.com. Personally, I see an opportunity to breath some new life into the LM1881 OSD with the usage of this Arduino-TVOUT providing some bright and talent person would take up the challenge. 😉
