MemberAfter great labor with the workaround involving the FTDI driver debacle, I got the FTDI breakout board suggested by ND to upload programs to the hackvision. I eventually found the last stable driver distribution which didn’t brick the board, and now it (the FTDI board at least) registers as a USB serial port on my device manager. Now, I get an error while uploading which says:
avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00
And the upload fails, leaving the stock Space Invaders/Pong combo on the machine.
I’m using the latest Arduino IDE, TVout library. etc on a windows 8 64bit machine. Is anyone else having this problem? I’ve been really looking forward to messing around with this thing and I don’t really want my money to have gone to waste.

KeymasterWhat setting are you using for the board in the Arduino IDE?
Tools-> Board should be set to Uno.I don’t know when you bought your kit so if Uno doesn’t work, try Duemilanove.
I assure you that Hackvision is programmable using a USB to serial adapter.

MemberI bought the kit a little over 2 weeks ago (v1), and I tried setting the board on both Uno and Duemilanove. Should the adapter register on the device manager as a USB serial adapter?

KeymasterYes, the usb to serial adapter should be visible on the Tools-> serial port menu. The error you are getting indicates that maybe you don’t have the right serial port selected.

MemberThere is only one serial port that it automatically registers under and I still get the same no response error. I just tried a loopback test which was successful but the hackvision itself still won’t respond while uploading.

KeymasterSounds like the device does work, but the programming is not working. There must be a soldering problem with the connector, or the 10K resistor, or the small cap next to the 10K resistor. I’d check the connections on those.

MemberI just resoldered the joints on all the components you listed. Before and after, while connected w/ the FTDI adapter, the board has power and the preloaded software comes up on my TV. I already reconfigured the adapter’s hardware ID and ran another loopback test which was successful, but there is still no response while uploading.
EDIT: Fixed! I had the adapter backwards from the beginning.
